ARTS IN HEALTH

Embroidered Polo-shirt

For this project I used embroidery work to embroider a wide range of the work that NHS maintenance workers undertake on a daily basis, the aim of this was to give the workers recognition and appreciation. This was my first time working through embroidery work, I found it very challenging. However, the more I practiced the more enjoyable it became.

This was a project created to hilight the hidden heroes of the NHS, the work was then displayed at St. Woolos Hospital.  I based the project on the NHS maintenance workers. My grandfather was an NHS maintenance working for over 40 years, this allowed me to gain a full understanding of the importance of their work and the type of work they complete on an every day basis. I was overwhelmed by the vas amount of different jobs they do within their role as a maintenance worker, and gained a full understanding that without the maintenance workers; there would be no running NHS hospitals. It was important for me to hilight this as you don't often hear about them  or their work around the hospitals, often people aren't even aware of them due to most of their work being behind the scenes. I believed that by creating a piece of work on this subject, it would raise awareness and apreaciation to the maintenance staff. When the work was completed and placed in the corridor of the hospital, there were two maintenance workers passing that were having a bad day. Suddenly after coming across my work, they said it instantly brightened their mood as it made them feel appreciated and acknowledged. The thought of helping them through a bad bad gave me a huge sense of happiness and pride.
