PORTRAIT OF MY GRANDFATHER
Acrylic on wood with sand and sea water
This Project was based on 'memories', I based this painting on my late grandfather. I wanted to remember our memories that took place in Porthcawl, this was a place that we looked forward to visiting every weekend. Since I was a young child we would visit porthcawl: the shops, car boot sales, eating fish and chips, getting some ice cream, but most of all spending many hours playing on the beach. The memories from the beach are what I based my project on. I re-visited the beach in order to re-live the memories that we shared, during my visit I collected wood, sea water and sand. These were all collected to create my portrait. I found a large piece of wood, cut it down to smaller pieces and nailed it all together: this was used for the base of the painting.

The image I used was from a picture I cropped and me and my grandfather, due to this being a painting dedicated to him: I didn't want to take that away and include me in the portrait. I used the sea water when painting the portrait and mixed the sand in to the paint, this allowed the smell of the beach to be imbedded in the portrait and for the memories to stay alive. This was a very personal piece of work that was very meaningful, I enjoyed the process and the memories it brought back.
